Moire-ain
This project drew inspiration from the “Discretization” class of Musical Analysis, where the process of analysis often involves breaking the piece down into relatively simpler and smaller parts. Often, the way these parts fit together and interact with each other is then examined in different contexts, much like Ligeti’s sound score composition titled ‘Artikulation’.
After recording a 1-minute sound of water drip-dropping from the faucet, I had to decide how I wanted those sounds to be presented graphically to create a sound score. Since water dropping from the sink was the only sound object, I had to figure out a way to display the different volume levels versus the frequency of the water dropping.
I began researching the affects of moire patterns and how they can be layered to form a photo or shape. Thinking that water droplets reminded me of these moire patterns layered and layered on top of one another, I moved forward with trying to represent this layering tactic through design.
I experiemented with moire patterns in Photoshop and Illustrator, but couldn’t quite get the layering affect that I was looking for. This is what brought my attention to the idea of printing on transparency paper and laying them on top of one another to display my visual sound score in an interactive way.
